Description: | Lekythos with flaring ring foot, convex resting surface, flat undersurface. Attenuated globular body, nearly horizontal shoulder, tall narrow neck, vertical strap handle attached to shoulder and against neck. | |
Decoration: | Resting and undersurfaces reserved, body black glazed except for red-figure scene opposite handle, reserved ground line, circling base of body. Scene: crouching sphinx, facing rt., hair bound by fillet, knot at nape of neck, wings extended with dooted coverts, 3 rows of flight feathers; to either side fluted column with flat capital. Shoulder reserved, black circumference line defining zone with palmette chain: palmettes tilted and upright with one directly above sphinx upside down with thicker petals, all linked by line with dots; neck glazed.
