Description: | Large situla, with deep body curving in and out to downturned rim with tapered lip. Small, flat, semicircular lug is attached to and projects out beyond the circumference of the rim. Two attachments for a vertical loop handle on top of the lug. Part of the bail handle, round in section, is touching one of the attachments, and is running along the rim united with it. Beneath the lug and attached to its undersurface is a moulded applique mask of Dionysos. A garland of berries and ivy leaves is hunging around his forehead, a bunch of grapes at either side of the face hides his ears. His eyes are in deep relief, as are his moustache, lips, and long beard. See CP 3250, C 34 205, C 34 206, Agora V, G 102. | |
